COURSE OVERVIEW
Do you want to be one of the most skilled drivers on Britain’s roads?
‘The IAM was founded in 1956 and since then, half a million people have qualified on our flagship Advanced Driver Course – the only Advanced Course in the UK accredited by the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
On purchasing our Advanced Driver Course, you will receive a Welcome Pack, including the Advanced Driver Course Logbook. Our skilled Observers will then take you through several guidance sessions in your own car, on dates and times that are mutually convenient to you both. The Advanced Driver Course Logbook lists the Competencies to be achieved, along with Run Sheets, on which your Observer will chart your progress, and Development Plans, where they suggest areas for you to concentrate on before the next guidance session.
Guidance sessions usually last around 2 hours. Right from the start of your training, the Observer will introduce the SYSTEM of car control: a hazard awareness and risk reduction method that develops a proactive approach to safety, based on enhanced observation, anticipation and planning. Once advanced driving skills have developed, and the Course Competencies have been achieved, we will put you in for the Advanced Driving Test, conducted by an IAM RoadSmart Examiner in your local area.
On passing the Advanced Driving Test you become a Full Member of IAM RoadSmart. Among other Members’ benefits, your improved competence may allow you to obtain preferential car insurance, on the basis that you have proved you are a careful, skilled road user. You also have the satisfaction of knowing that you have prepared for and achieved a standard of driving that puts you in the top 5% of road users in the country.
